Ameron recently completed it's first commercial wind tower order consisting of 25 2 megawatt wind turbine towers. San Diego Gas and Electric has purchased the entire output from the new 50-megawatt wind power farm. The output from this farm can furnish enough power to run approximately 10,000 homes annually or can replace 150,000 barrels of foreign oil per year. Wind energy is the fastest growing energy sector in the world. Ameron is well positioned for this type of specialized, large, heavy-steel fabrication at its Fontana, California plant.

Two of Ameron's divisions collaborated to fabricate and coat the steel structures. Ameron's Water Transmission Group fabricated these 220' tall, large diameter (14'7"), tapered steel towers, while the Performance Coatings & Finishes Group's highly engineered coating system was applied to interior and exterior surfaces.

The towers in the background are some of the 25 towers furnished by Ameron to a wind farm in San Diego, California. The two megawatt wind towers are significantly larger than other units that are predominant in America today. These towers are made up of three sections with a total weight of 164 tons. The section shown on the truck in the foreground is a top section eight to nine feet in diameter , 81 feet long and weighing approximately 35 tons.
